The USS Leyte Gulf CG-55 was commissioned in Port Everglades, Florida on September 26, 1987. She was the first ship ever to be commissioned here. She was adopted by the Council on December 1, 1990. The current commanding officer is Captain Scott Phillpot, executive officer is Commander Bruce Apgar and the Command Master Chief is Mattie Wells. Homeport is Norfolk, Virginia. The USS Leyte Gulf is currently deployed as part of Carrier Strike Group 12, led by the USS Enterprise to points East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
