Broward County Council

Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti was the guest speaker for the Broward County Council of the Navy League of the United States on February 12, 2009 at the Tropical Acres Restaurant.

Sheriff Lamberti spoke to a group of eighty Navy Leaguers, military personnel and guests.  He pointed out the need for BSO to monitor very carefully the number of incarcerations, as any excess above a State mandate, would result in a fine of $1000 per day per inmate. Recently they’ve been approaching the limit.

His area of greatest concern is the exponential growth of gangs in Broward County.  He pointed out that there were gang members in every jail in each of the 67 counties in Florida.  Broward has 80 gangs with membership of about 1000.  As part of their initiation into the gang, the potential member must kill a person, to quote a gang member captured after a convenience store robbery and murder of an innocent bystander, " I killed him to increase the body count."

Sheriff Lamberti is the first career police officer to be appointed by Governor Crist to lead the Broward Sheriff’s department.
