Broward
County Council
Lexie
Perreras, a senior at
Cardinal
Gibbons
High School
, with four students, Anthony Campenni, Stephanie Botero, Lauren Cooney, Fabiana
Assenza, presented a handmade poppy wreath to the Veterans Administration Clinic
in
Oakland Park, February 13, 2007 in honor of Remembrance Day. The project was
sponsored by the Broward County Council of the Navy League.
Her
idea of creating a wreath and presenting it to the Veterans was born, while she
attended
Girls
State
in
Tallahassee
this past summer. Not having knowledge of the location or being able to bring
this idea to fruition, she came in contact with a member of the Broward County
Council Navy League, Denise Hein, public relations, director for the council.
Lexie
wanted to bring joy to a group of men and women having served their country
during times of war. Her thoughts were to bring awareness to people her age of
the sacrifices men and women made at the timer
America
was in “harms way.”
The
students served refreshments to the veterans on Tuesday and presented them with
gifts. This particular clinic is hidden from the ocean, beautiful condos and
just sits northwest of
Ft.
Lauderdale
.
Two
prominent members of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs were also in
attendance, Stephen Lucas, Director of Miami Medical Center and Dr. Phillip
Greenberg, M.D. Chief Medical Officer of
Oakland Park
Outpatient Clinic.
Poppies
are sold on Veterans Day to help raise money for the Veterans Hospitals
throughout the
United States
