On June 25, 2008 , an electrical fire broke out at Entry Control Point 5, a post designed to safeguard entrants into the City of Fallujah .  This post is watched over by the Marines of Company L, 3rd Bn 6th Marines as well as the Iraqi police.  Before the Fallujah Fire Department could douse the flames, 90 Marines lost everything they owned, including personal possessions and issued equipment.

When word of the fire and resulting destruction reached the States, Katharine Evans (HM2), mother of LCpl Shaun Evans of the 3/6, organized a drive to raise funds and collect donations of personal items to replenish articles lost by the Marines.  She contacted Al and Shelly Stein, members of the Broward County Council, who previously sent packages of personal items to her son.

For the past three years, the Steins have been raising funds through a book project.  Using popular current books donated from various sources, they set up in front of a local Wal-Mart and ask for donations in exchange for the books.  The funds are used to support two deployed Marine platoons, one stationed in Iraq and the other in Afghanistan , as well as a few individual Marines including LCpl Evans.

Upon hearing of the items needed by the 90 Marines, they purchased 2800 wipes, 100 pairs of white cotton over-the-calf socks, foot powder, insect repellent, hand sanitizer, powdered drink packages, CDs and a wide assortment of snacks.  The items were delivered to Katharine Evans for shipment to the Company.  The Steins are committed to raising additional funds.  They will stay in touch with Katharine and will make every effort to acquire and ship the items the Marines identify as being the most needed.
