Broward County Council
The
Broward County Florida Council had quite an eventful June dinner social.
The Council recognized reservists from their adopted Navy and Marine
Corps Reserve Center from Hialeah, Florida.
Each reservist was honored with a plaque and monetary award.
MA2 Isolina Santiago Oliver received recognition as Reserve Sailor of the
Year. Sgt. Kenneth Padmore was
honored as Reserve Marine of the Year. Sgt.
Padmore is a Miami-Dade County firefighter and about 25 of his co-workers were
in attendance to show their support. Local
news media was on hand to cover the event as Sgt. Padmore is being considered
for national recognition for heroism displayed during his recent deployment.
Cpl Omar D. Rufino was selected as the Active Duty Marine of the Year;
unfortunately he could not be in attendance and his award was accepted by Major
Chris Guarnieri. Also not in attendance was Active Duty Sailor of the Year FC1
Joseph A. Paramore.
In
honor of this night of recognition of the reservists, RADM Casey W. Coane, USN
(Ret) spoke to the group. RADM Coane is the National Executive Director of the Naval
Reserve Association. He shared a
very interesting and thought-provoking insight into the role of the reservists
in today’s military. The
honorable Mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Jim Naugle presented RADM Coane
with a key to the City. Mayor
Naugle presented the Council with an official commendation.
The Council was also recognized by U. S. Coast Guard Air Station Miami
for participation as volunteers at their annual Runway 5K run.
The Spruance Division, US Naval Sea Cadets presented the colors. In honor of Flag Day, members received a miniature flag as well as a pamphlet on how to properly display the American flag. In honor of the Navy League birthday, Navy League mission statement/goal cards were handed out.
