Broward County Council

The Broward County Council celebrated Sea Cadet Month at its September dinner social on September 11, 2008.  Seven cadets from the Spruance Division served as the guest speakers at the meeting. Sharing their summer training activities were Brittany Baudin, Robert McStravik, Orion Rollins, Thomas Hixon, Augustin Hernandez, Ryan McDaniel and Adam Drucker.

Several years ago, the Council began the tradition of having the sea cadets share their experiences with the Council and it has become one of the most popular meetings of the year.  This year, in addition to the cadets’ stories, the Council members were shown a slide show of their activities.  Many of the cadets went to more than one training session over the summer with some traveling as far away as Canada .  Members were quite impressed to hear these 15 - 17 year old cadets describe their roles as leaders to groups of younger 11-14 year old cadets.  Most spoke of friendships they developed that they felt would last a lifetime.  Each cadet enthusiastically described their training activities and emphasized the fact that they would have never had the experience if they were not part of the Sea Cadet program.  Bill Weiler, Council President, presented each cadet with a certificate of appreciation to recognize them for their achievements and to thank them for their participation in the meeting.

The Spruance Division is sponsored by the Fort Lauderdale Council but has close ties to the Broward County Council.  The color guard often presents the colors at Council meetings and their commander, Alan Starr, serves as First Vice President of the Council.
