Broward County Council President attends
USS Nitze Change-of-Command Ceremony...
submitted by bob hein, Broward county
council president
There is no such thing as "just another"
change-of-command. The ceremony represents the culmination of twenty
years of hard work by highly capable and dedicated men and their
families. The first command is unforgettable. And so it was on 17
December, 2007, in the shipyard at Norfolk, Va.
The crew, dignitaries, family and friends
of the NITZE had assembled on the flight deck for the occasion. The
Broward County, Florida, Council of the Navy League was represented
by Council President Robert N. Hein and Denise Hein, the newsletter
editor.
It was a blustery, crisp fall day with
hardly a cloud in the sky. In true naval tradition, the proceedings
went forward flawlessly. Captain Gelimne reviewed the many
outstanding accomplishments of the ship while on deployment off the
Horn of Africa and praised the performance of CDR. Robert N. Hein
Jr. and his crew for a job well done.
CDR Hein used a sports theme to describe
the ship’s efforts and successes. He ended his talk with a statement
common in sports' interviews, ’Hi Mom,’ which brought tears to his
mother's eyes. After his orders were read, CDR Hein presented
bouquets of irises to his wife and mother.
CDR Long read his orders and command was
passed to him. Everyone retired to the hangar for refreshments. |
