UNIQUE WELCOME

Navy League Council President welcomes USS Nitze DDG 94, so what is unique about that... the captain is his son

A unique welcome will take place in Port Everglades in late August when Navy League Broward County Council President Bob Hein welcomes the USS NITZE DDG 94, the captain of the ship is his son, CDR Robert N. Hein, Jr.

For over 50 years, local Navy League members have been greeting ships of all nations upon arrival, providing hospitality for the crew, earning Fort Lauderdale recognition as the “best liberty port in the world.”

About the Navy League
Since its founding in 1902, with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, the Navy League of the United States, currently 63,000 members strong, has provided a powerful voice to Congress and the American people for stronger Sea Services. The Navy League has grown to become the foremost citizens’ organization serving, supporting, and standing with all U.S. Sea Services, United States Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine.

Today, Navy League’s mission translates into three main initiatives: public education and advocacy; support for active duty military personnel and their families; and encouragement of leadership, patriotism and service among America’s youth.
Military background
CDR Hein’s mother Denise, from Louisiana, traces family roots to Captain Jacques Verret, a man instrumental in the birth of the United States, an early participant in the American Revolution. His paternal great-grandfather, a colonel in the army, served his country during World War I; his grandfather served 23 years in the Navy seeing action during World War II and the Korean War, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander; Bob, his father, was a naval aviator during the beginning of the Vietnam War.

Commander Robert Hein, Jr, is a descendant of men with virtues of honor, duty, loyalty, love of country and willingness to defend liberty wherever the call takes them, from the Gulf Coast battles of the American Revolution to the present day battle against global terrorism and tyranny where he serves as commanding officer of the USS NITZE DDG 94.
Family.

Robert Hein Jr, is the son of long time Fort Lauderdale residents Bob & Denise Hein. Hein Sr spent 32 years as a pilot for United Airlines, retiring as Captain on the B767. Community involvement of Robert’s parents, in addition to the Navy League, includes the Men’s Club at St. Sebastian Church; Denise has served on the Fort Lauderdale Libraries board, including president for two years. Both parents are active in the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.

The Hein Family includes two other sons, middle son Denis, graduate of Loyola University, works for Wells Fargo Bank developing security software. His Louisiana roots and an early career part-time job at Antoine’s, the famed New Orleans French Quarter eatery, inspired a love for the local cuisine. Denis even flew down to Fort Lauderdale to serve as chef, preparing all the food, when his parents hosted a Mardi Gras social as a fundraiser for Navy League Broward County Council. Younger son Steven is a graduate of USC and film producer in Los Angeles.

CDR Hein is married to the former Eleanor Randrup; they are proud parents of two sons, Matt and Chris. Chris says the coolest place they have lived was Hawaii, “It was out there.” Matt was born in Naples, Italy, and hopes to attend the Naval Academy.

---------------
“I am looking forward to the
arrival of a special ship, which will mark the return of the Bataan Battle Group, that ship is the USS NITZE DDG 94, it is commanded by my son CDR Robert N. Hein, Jr. It will be the highlight of my presidency, and a lifelong
memory, to greet him as
president.”
~ Bob Hein, President
Navy League Broward County Council

-----------------

Navy career. Robert Jr, born in 1965, at U.S. Naval Hospital Air Station, Oak Harbor, Washington, raised in Broward County, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout from Troop 111, graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas HS, achieving his goal of attending the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, with an appointment by Congressman E. Clay Shaw, Jr. After graduation from the Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science, Robert then earned a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs at the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.

CDR Hein’s first ship tour was aboard the frigate USS KOELSCH FF-1049, as assistant Operations Officer and deploying to Central America. His next assignment was on cruiser USS BELKNAP CG 26, home ported Gaeta, Italy, where he served as First Lieutenant and Damage Control Officer, and where his first son was born. He then transferred to Key West, Florida, serving aboard the patrol hydrofoil USS ARIES PHM-5

After attending Surface Warfare Department Head School in Newport, Hein was assigned commissioning operations officer USS RUSSELL DDG 59, the tour included Tomahawk missile strikes against Iraq during Operation Desert Strike; he then served as aide-de-camp to Commander U.S. Surface Force Pacific Fleet in San Diego; returned to the RUSSELL in Hawaii as executive officer, deploying to the Middle East for Operation Enduring Freedom. During this deployment, the RUSSELL rescued the crew of a downed B-1 bomber off the coast of Diego Garcia.

CDR Hein’s next assignment was Joint Operations Directorate, Joint Staff Pentagon, until taking command of USS NITZE in June 2006.

USS NITZE has just returned from a six-month deployment with operations off the coast of Somalia and the Arabian Sea as part of the Bataan Strike Group.

The tasks were varied: patrol the waters off Africa’s east coast for smugglers and pirates, ferry Marines to training exercises and guard Iraqi oil platforms, for example. The NITZE spent four months near the Horn of Africa, with teams boarding about 40 merchant ships and fishing dhows in what the Navy calls “maritime security operations.”

The destroyer operated as part of Combined Task Force 150, a coalition that included British, French and German navies. The idea: deter smuggling of people and drugs and reassure pirate-fearing merchants off the coast of Somalia. The NITZE’s homeport is Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Local visit. The August ship visit to Port Everglades will be a proud time for the Hein Family as they welcome their son and the crew of the USS NITZE. Numerous community events are planned, including an All Hands Reception, workday at Habitat for Humanity, a Captain’s Dinner honoring the Hein Family and more.
